Why am I not showing in Google AI Overviews?
There is no separate index and no separate submission for AI Overviews. Google's documentation on AI features in Search points publishers to the same indexing, eligibility, and preview-control rules as ordinary results (Google's AI features doc). So absence has 4 checkable causes, in diagnostic order: your page is not indexed or ranks nowhere near the topic, your snippet settings exclude you, your page has no liftable answer, or the queries you watch do not trigger an Overview at all. Most cases resolve in the first 3.
Step 1: are you even in the running?
AI Overviews are assembled from Google's index. If the page is not indexed, or ranks on page 5 for the topic, the Overview question is premature. Check Search Console's page indexing report for the URL, then check where you actually rank for the query. An accidental noindex tag is a classic silent killer here, covered in fixing accidental noindex. No AI-specific work matters until this layer passes.
Step 2: did you exclude yourself with snippet controls?
Google documents that its preview controls govern AI experiences too: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and max-snippet limit what Search can show from your page, including in AI Overviews. These tags get added years ago, by a plugin, by a developer solving a different problem, and then sit there excluding you. Read your page source for meta robots directives and audit your CMS's SEO plugin settings. This is the highest-value 5-minute check on this page.
Step 3: is there anything worth lifting?
An Overview cites pages that supply a specific, self-contained piece of the answer. Google's public guidance on AI features echoes its long-standing advice: create helpful, reliable, people-first content. In practice, the pages that get cited open with the answer, contain a verifiable fact, and can be quoted without dragging in surrounding context. If your page buries its point under 6 paragraphs of preamble, restructure it. The patterns are in adding answer blocks and our AI Overviews optimization guide.
Step 4: does your query trigger an Overview at all?
AI Overviews appear on a subset of queries, and Google adjusts that subset continuously. If searches in your money topic simply do not produce Overviews, absence is not a failure, it is the weather. Search your target queries in an incognito window and note whether any Overview appears. If none does, your battle is classic ranking, and the Overview will find you if it ever arrives for that query. Track what you control, not what Google is A/B testing this quarter.
What not to buy
There is no AI Overviews submission service, no fast lane, and no tool that can place you in one. Vendors reselling that promise are reselling the 4 checks above with a markup and a guarantee they cannot honor. The checks are free to understand and cheap to run. Our audit runs the site-side ones, indexation signals, snippet controls, answer structure, schema, as part of the standard 73, with the exact element to change when one fails.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No AI-specific schema exists. Ordinary complete structured data helps machines understand your pages, which serves every surface. Start with missing structured data.
My competitor is in the Overview and we outrank them. Why?
Overviews assemble passages, not rankings. A lower-ranked page with a cleaner liftable answer can be selected over a higher-ranked page without one. That is step 3, and it is fixable.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Search?
The documented lever is the same preview-control family: nosnippet and its variants restrict AI use of your content and also restrict regular snippets. Google does not currently document an AI-only opt-out that preserves full snippets.
